Imagine a cozy table set for two at a charming restaurant, softly lit and brimming with anticipation. It was supposed to be a special celebration, a moment to savor together. Little did we know, the evening had its own plans.
As we settled into our seats, the menu was handed over with a flourish. Our excitement grew as we looked forward to exploring a new culinary experience. However, our enthusiasm quickly turned into confusion as we scanned the menu.
The menu, unfortunately, wasn't as informative as we hoped. Descriptions were brief, to non-existing, leaving us guessing about ingredients and preparation. To make matters worse, there were no translations or pictures to guide us through the selections. We took our phones up and start looking for translations or pictures with the food. Fifteen minutes later when the order was taken, we had to change most of our selection as some of them where missing, some of them where on unit which made it even more confusing.
So, our first misstep occurred when we placed our orders. Without translations, we took a chance on a dish that sounded intriguing, only to find out it wasn't quite what we expected. What we imagined to be a light appetizer arrived as a substantial main course, and what we thought was grilled turned out to be fried.
As the dishes arrived, we realized another challenge: portion sizes. Some portions were larger than anticipated, and suddenly our cozy table seemed to shrink under the weight of all the food. We exchanged surprised glances, wondering how we'd ever manage to taste everything.
But in the midst of the confusion, there was laughter. We swapped bites of our respective dishes, marveling at the unexpected flavors we encountered. The evening became a journey of shared surprises, and the menu mishaps turned into charming anecdotes that we'd remember and laugh about for years to come.
One of the things that we did enjoy was the grilled octopus’s presentation and made us feel sorry to understand that they do struggle to make a good impression and offer a good experience and they lack the main ingredient: a clear menu.
In the end, the two-person celebration dinner became a lesson in the importance of a well-crafted menu. It's not just about presenting choices; it's about creating an experience that enhances the moments we share. Clear descriptions, translations, and perhaps even a glimpse of the dishes through pictures can truly make a difference.
Lastly, portion sizes could be more clearly indicated. A simple note on the menu about whether a dish is a small plate, a main course, or meant for sharing could prevent the unintended over-ordering that we experienced.
As we replayed the evening in our minds, we couldn't help but think that these simple improvements could have turned our charming mishap into a flawless dining experience and would make us go back. It reminded us that menus are more than just lists of food; they're invitations to embark on a culinary journey.
So, to all the restaurants out there, take note: a well-designed menu can elevate not just the dining experience, but also the memories created at your tables – especially for those embracing the 'Dining Experience While Living as an Expat.' A little attention to detail can go a long way in ensuring that every celebration, whether big or intimate, is a delightful journey of flavors and shared moments.
